What I Have Learned & Where to Start

It has taken a long time for me to be able to listen. Our bodies give us signs all the time. Now that I think about it so do our friends, family, co-workers. Hmm... can you think of something that someone has told you about yourself or a sign from your body that you brushed off as nothing or thought it's not true? Stop and think about that. It can be tough to accept feedback or to connect with our body's wisdom.

About 4 weeks ago my knees started aching when I would squat down or bend over to pick something up. At first I ignored it, I told myself it was just an off day. When it persisted though I knew my body was giving me a sign. My knees never hurt even with all that I do at the gym.

I made an appointment with my nutritionist to get her thoughts. She suggested I test my urine pH. (I can do this at home). Well, bingo! my body was testing very acidic. As you may know, cancer thrives in an acidic environment. Since I lost my mom to breast cancer I don't like to mess around so I took steps to bring my body back into balance and get a more alkaline pH. I'm not going to go into the details here. What I will share is a good article on this topic. (Look for it AFTER you read my blog). Check out the chart that shows alkaline and acidic foods.
Many people don't realize how important what we put in and on our bodies is to our health. I thought l ate healthy because I eat a lot of vegetables. However, when I started to dig in, do my research and use myself as my own experiment of one I found out how wrong I was. I have learned what foods work for my body and well-being. I feel it when I eat foods that don't work for me which helps to keep me on track.

So where do you start? The fact that you have read this far tells me you are ready to listen to your body. Start with small movements, small actions. Just start ! I don't care if that means putting your workout clothes on, driving to the gym and sitting inside the door for 5 minutes and going home. If that is what you need to be comfortable or to start a new, healthy habit then do it. Stop making excuses. Who doesn't have 5 minutes? You can raise your goal in a few days and walk on the treadmill for 5 minutes. The most important part is to take action to move your body.
I can promise you this - if you do not move your body it will move you. If you choose to start on your nutrition then start by drinking enough water every day for a week and see how that feels.
